Alex Revell hails Stevenage ‘DNA’ in return to winning ways

Alex Revell was happy to see Stevenage bounce back with a 1-0 win over Wycombe – even if he felt the performance was not great.

Chem Campbell’s first goal for the club was enough to make it five wins from six in League One and recover from last week’s loss to Huddersfield.

“When you look at our DNA and what it takes to win games, you saw it here,” said Revell.

“Grit, determination, aggression, defensive organisation and togetherness – you saw all that.

“And when you don’t always play the football you want to play, it is important you don’t concede and don’t give away chances and stay in the game.

“For the first 10 minutes, we didn’t really get going, they brought the game to us.

“We did grow into the game and have more control and after that, I thought we were really deserving of the win.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t by more but I don’t think Filip Marschall has had a save to make.

“And I said in the build-up, and I said this to the players, good teams bounce back and we bounced back.

“It was nervous in the second half without our goal being threatened. But for most of the game we defended brilliantly as a whole team and that’s what we asked them to do.

“The work they are putting in at the moment for the club and each other is incredible and that is why we are getting results.

“It’s important we keep doing that because when we do, we are a really hard team to play against.”

Jamie Reid had stung the hands of Wycombe keeper Mikki van Sas while a header from Jordan Roberts was steered wide of an unguarded net after the keeper had failed to gather a deep free-kick.

Wycombe did have the odd chance but their two best ones were blocked by Lewis Freestone.

And it left boss Mike Dodds facing a chorus of boos from the travelling fans at the final whistle.

He said: “I don’t think we performed to the levels we can.

“You try to make changes to get that spark into the game and we never found that spark.

“We got what we deserved. I’ve championed some of the previous performances where we haven’t got a result. I could stand here and say we may have deserved to draw the game but that being said, we still didn’t get to our levels.

“I’ve been charged with taking this club in a completely different direction and I’ve got to endure a little bit of pain.

“I’ve got thick skin and I’m really clear in terms of what we’re doing.”
